Scott Walter Profile

Scott Walter - Over Here and Over Strong....

Scoot getting on with the UKs Nowra equivalent - Raven Tor - here he is finishing Bens Roof 7C+
Hooray some 'Scoots' info...

I am a 29 year old native of Melbourne, Australia, but I am living in Cambridge UK for 2006. When I’m not climbing I work as a high school teacher, and I also study Biostatistics. I’ve been climbing since 1995 when, with mostly motivation and little talent, I began to throw myself at the traditional routes in my local area including the trad Mecca of Arapiles. Although I was too gripped to let go most of the time, I kind of reveled in being exposed as hell, miles off the deck, kilograms of gear jangling around my waist. It was all about being tenacious and headstrong in dire situations.

As time went on I came to appreciate the luxury of clipping bolts and the satisfaction of eventually climbing a route that at first felt impossible. I began to understand the art and science of redpointing, and all the highs and lows that come with it. Thankfully my sport climbing phase began after lycra had gone out of fashion (not that my ample thighs wouldn’t look good in lycra).

Scott on Nightmare 8B, Frankenjura...

Of course, with sport climbing a natural accompaniment is bouldering, and so in my current phase I love nothing more that spending hours or even days working on a handful of moves until I "understand them" as the Bleausards say. And what better place to be a boulderer than the land of the long winter and the well equipped cellar: Britain. So I guess in my current phase its all about power and precision (or trying to get it)

When I’m not climbing, training, working or studying, I like to spend time with my lass and play guitar.

Name: Scott Walter, a.k.a "Scoots", DOB: 15-01-1977, Occupation: Supply Teacher & Biostatistics student, Home town: Melbourne, Australia (currently in Cambridge, UK for 2006). Height: 172 cm, Weight: 68-71 kg

Favorite Crag: Muline, Grampians, Oz

The Hit List

Another shot of Scott on Nightmare...

Over summer I spent 6 weeks in the Frankenjura. The weather was absolutely roasting, even for us Aussies, so it was hard work on those tweaky little jura holds. It was of course a great trip, how could you not have fun there? And I managed to get a few 8b’s ticked off including the classic Nightmare. So we learnt the hard way that July is NOT the time to go, the locals insist September or October is ideal. But as Arnie said: "I’ll be back".
