Here's some spring from Katherine Schirrmacher, one of our UK climbers who seems to be quietly trying to 'dodge the bullet' that is the English weather by heading out to better climes.... Hi Richie, I just thought I’d write since it’s been a while. Frustrations of living in a swamp have been running high for a while but I found a few dry spots and ticked a few things over the winter. It still feels like winter even now and I’m eternally waiting for my tulips to bloom. When swamp levels were at their highest in February I drove all the way up to Northumberland on my own desperately wanting to do something, given the endless winter in the climbing wall and I managed to do Cubby’s lip 7c. Another long term project of mine was Blockbuster at Caley 7b+. When I say a project I go there once a year, fondle the first hold, fall back down again and go home. However a trip up there this Spring I seemed to finally be able to make use of the hold and I did the problem. For me personally that move was a big deal even though it doesn’t get a big grade. Since then I’ve been to Buoux, which was a wake up call to routes and old school grades and felt a bit dejected with ‘only’ having Captain Crochet 7b to show for my efforts. However 2 weeks later I travelled to Turkey to the coming into fashion Geyikbayiri near Antalya. This time, on ‘modern’ grades I flashed 7b+ and redpointed a brilliant 7c Gizmo, I was pleased considering my total lack of routes for the last few months. I was ‘researching’ for a coaching holiday Steve McClure and I are running there later this year. A high volume of climbing in the magical world of ‘outside’ was exactly what I needed. I’ve been back on my boulder projects in the last week but it’s a struggle timing everything with gaps in the weather right now. I feel on top of my climbing – I just hope that the weather allows me a window. It’s a busy time for me right now as I’m working quite hard on my coaching business (see www.lovetoclimb.co.uk), practising for the MIA assessment this August and trying to climb. I hope you are doing ok - the weather over here is a mess at the moment! Katherine
