Hints and Tips

A bunch of helpful stuff

This section of the site is all about Wild Country people passing on some of the knowledge gained over the years about various aspects of gear, from placing it to carrying it and beyond….

These may not necessarily be all about Wild Country gear, and all of it may not be factual; there will be opinions and ideas on many aspects and styles of climbing, but it should all be useful on quests from big walls to the gritstone edges.

Also this advice will not always come from Wild Country but will be in in association with its sponsored climbers, testers and other ne’er do wells who we rely on for advice. However, within this section we will be always open to receiving hints, tips or ideas that we may not have thought of from you ‘Joe Public’. So you may well see advice from people like Andy Kirkpatrick, Airlie Anderson or Steve Petro next to some guy who’s e-mailed us from Alaska about the best way of racking biners we’ve ever seen…..

Also this advice is not meant to be parochial so we will be endeavouring to build a base of knowledge that will be suitable for a wide variety of people. From those starting out in climbing, to people visiting an area they don’t know or moving on to a style of climbing they’re unfamilar with.

Beginners Advice
In this section we will be trying to supply links to all the places on the site in which feature useful information especially suitable for beginners.

Friends and Camming
In this section we'll be trying to give as much information as you can utilise from the page about the art of placing and using Friends.

Gear Selection
I’m just starting out, what gear do I buy to suit most routes I will encounter? I’m on my first long mountain route, what should I carry? What gear will fit best at Joshua Tree? What should I carry on a ‘trad’ limstone E2 / 5.11?
Click through for advice from Ian Parnell, Richie Patterson and others on choosing and placing gear. For example, alpinist Ian Parnell shares his ideas on the best beginners rack that should take a learner from ‘Top Roping’ to ‘First Leads’.

Safety Stuff - New Section
A new section which will fill with handy help and advice about safety issues, starting with 'how strong is your belay loop'.....answer???

Reviews
Also in this section are contained a library of reviews to enable you to see an unbiased opinion of the Wild Country product you are thinking of purchasing. These are from all around the world and from many different magazines.

Hot Tips
These are small nuggets of info that work for you that you want to pass on to the world in general. This section is meant to be supplied by feedback from you, the climber, so please go to the Feedback Form and send us your advice about how you use your gear….
Any advice used will be credited and we will send a chalkbag out to everyone who gets a piece on the page….
Please make your tip is marked Hints and Tips clearly in the Feedback Form box and do try to think if it is relatively safe (and legal)

FAQs
These are a selection of our most 'Frequently Asked Questions' about gear and this section will increase in size as we get more feedback from you the consumer about the issues which are most confusing / interesting - and most asked about.

After our Hints and Tips you too will be able to climb like a sponsored hero...(maybe?)!!
