Ben Heason, bold grit climber, Wild Country and Red Chili sponsee (and also our staff trainer) has been down under giving the guys a taste of his slideshow and trying to get some cragging done... Here's a quick report of what he's been up to.... "After giving a slideshow about my Angel Falls expedition at the first Australian Climbing Festival in 8 years last weekend, I headed down to Tasmania for the weekend. It's heading into winter down here so we were expecting some poor weather. But the sun was shining, and fortunately the sea was only "quite" rough! The main objective was the world famous sea stack, the "Totem Pole". Two views of the Totem Pole - First - Ben showing that he's not exaggerating when he says the sea was 'quite' rough....and second Ben a little bit further up the route... We got extremely wet and cold, but had an amazing adventure. After a tough 2 hour walk in, and an entertaining abseil / pendulum approach, the climbing was harder than we expected, but more importantly it was also staggeringly good - some of the best and most memorable I've ever done! Climbing E5/6 (F7b+ with a mix of trad gear and bolts) on-sight with wet shoes and chalk bag etc was a little more than my current level of fitness would allow, so I was disappointed to fall off. But anyone who's climbed the Totem Pole will I'm sure agree that even getting to the top is tough, and a great achievment in itself. I couldn't recommend it more highly. We had another couple of days cragging on the Tasman Peninsula (South East Tasmania) on another sea stack called the Moai, and a fantastic sea cliff called Paradiso. Next up it's off to the Arapiles and Grampians for a few days."
