Martin Atkinson, Managing Director of Wild Country. Notice Reference Damaged Infinity Rope "A damaged Infinity rope has been returned to Wild Country. It is a 10 mm Sprint Single rope and has a localised section of sheath that has been severely cut. The rope is certainly in no condition to use and we are very thankful that it was returned to the shop before anybody used it for rock climbing. Additionally it has come to light that this rope and several others received incorrect end markers that indicate the rope type – single or half rope. We have sent the rope off to the manufacturer for investigation, inspected all of our stock and we are in the process of contacting customers who have recently received short ropes asking them to inspect the end labels and the overall condition of the rope. We will prepare a post to ask all stockists of Infinity ropes to check that the end labels have the correct rope type and inspect the condition of their stock. We also request that any customers who have recently bought a short rope inspect it for damage and end markers. If there is any doubt at all concerning the integrity of the rope, you should make contact with your retailer or directly with Wild Country. We are now launching a full investigation into how the rope could become damaged in this way. This will encompass the complete process from manufacture to movement of the product through each stage of the supply chain. Our initial investigation is inconclusive. The nature of the damage and the profile of the ends of the yarn indicate damage caused by cutting with a sharp object. How and where this damage occurred is unclear. Our present quality assurance system for ropes consists of manufacture in a factory certified to the internationally recognised quality system standard ISO 9001, using braiding machines with automatic cut-offs in the case of sheath or core yarn breakage, plus 100% manual inspection of the braided ropes before coiling and packing. The ropes are shipped by Ocean transport to Wild Country, where we check the integrity of the packaging. If there is any sign at all of damage or tampering, we investigate the circumstances and re-inspect the product. Warehousing is in an environment that is safe for braided nylon ropes, protected from UV and any other harmful influences. Being climbers we are only too aware how critical it is that climbing equipment is 100% safe for use. We invest a great deal of our time assuring the quality and integrity of our equipment. Wild Country is an ISO9001/2000 certified company – safety is our business! However it is good practice to check your equipment every time before climbing, damage can occur to climbing equipment through contamination or mechanical damage in any number of scenarios; not only in the factory or retail store, but also during storage at home or whilst climbing."
