James Pearson - Spring Update

09/05/2008

Wild Country mega-athlete and our hotshot of the year (so far) with his ascent of The Groove E10 7b, James Pearson sent us his latest updates in what seems to be a hectic and very motivated schedule!!!

James Pearson on Fight on Black Widdop....V9

'March - I travelled to China with a team of “The North Face” athletes with the aim of establishing the hardest sport route in China. I bolted a 40 meter project at Lei Pi Shan that took a direct line up a concave, ever steepening wall via pockets, Tufas and a 4 point off dyno! Unfortunately it started to rain and the route began to seep before I had chance to give it a good try. The date of my return home arrived and the route was still wet. I left without completing it, but at least it will be there for me to do in the future. In the mean time, I hope someone else is able to make the first ascent of it and take Chinese sport climbing to a new level.

April - Most of April was spent endurance training for a project I want to climb in Scotland. Whilst this is pretty boring and uneventful, it is a necessity if I want to stay on the top of my game and be able to climb the hardest routes. Also I travelled to London to give a multimedia presentation on my “Milestones and Motivations” at the opening party of a new climbing wall. The presentation went very well and I received lots of praise and positive feedback off the audience.

At the end of April I competed in the Christie Seven Summit Challenge at Manchester Climbing Centre. The main aim of the event was to raise money for the Christie Cancer Hospital but there was also a competition for teams of 3 people, to see who could climb the highest in a 24 hour period. My team won, with a combined height of 15,710 meters. The event was covered by local and international newspapers, climbing magazines and was filmed for BBC news.

Here is a report of the event -

'The 25/26th of April saw climbers at MCC taking on the challenge of climbing the height of the Seven Summits (43,322 meters) in 24 hours, in order to raise money for Christie’s hospital in South Manchester. Enormous heights were climbed, and sales of finger tape rocketed as over 200 climbers took to the ropes, including over 60 hardy souls taking on the full 24 hour challenge.

The target height of 43,322 metres was achieved in an incredible 5 hours, and so further targets were needed to keep the motivation flowing! The event was now the ’Fourteen 8000-metre peaks Challenge’, giving us a target height of just over 115,000m. Teams climbed throughout the night, spurred on by huge amounts of Gatorade and other sugary goodness, and the target was one again within reach.

By 9am, target 2 was in sight. Once again, climbing was proving too easy, and so the original mountains were added back on! We were now aiming for a height of 150406.5m, and everyone was still worryingly awake… By the end of the event, an amazing 161,580.5m had been climbed. The team climbing the highest consisted of world class climbers John Dunne, Dave Barrans, and James Pearson, who notched up 15,710m between them.'

I hope that's col for you and you can use it on the site, i am still training endurance and will be going to try Rhapsody, Dave Macleods E11 at Dumbarton Rock next week...
