Friend Repair Kits

Friend Repairs - Field Maintainable Kits

Since 2004 Wild Country have offered two kits to repair both Technical and Forged Friends. These have been designed to be simple to use and are sold to enable climbers to sort out the most common problem encountered with all SLCDs; that of broken trigger wires.
This means that even if you are in the furthest reaches of the planet your Wild Country unit should be able to be made usable.

The two kits are separated into Forged Friends and Technical Friends.

The Technical Friends kit is designed for Technical Friends 0.4 to 4 from 2004 onwards - but can also be used to fix older units with a little more fiddling. There are instructions provided for both types of repair.

The Forged Friend kit is suitable for Forged Friends 2~4, and is suitable for older units as well.

Both kits contain enough parts to repair two units.

The instructions for the three types of repairs can be downloaded in PDF format below.

Please remember, these kits are designed to be used on Friends less than 10 years old at the date of repair.

Wild Country in the UK offers a service for factory quality Friend trigger and sling repairs, however, once again this service is only available for Friends less than 10 years old.
In the USA there are recommended repair services available - please click through below to see.

Warning

Wild Country can take no responsibility for the misuse of these repair kits, or for any repairs carried out with these kits.
Repairing any Friends can be potentially difficult and if you are in any doubt please contact Wild Country.
Repairing Friends over 10 years old is especially discouraged by Wild Country.

Obsolescence Notice

Friends will deteriorate over time in the course of normal use and because of this we are required by directive 89/686/EEC to give an obsolescence date. It is difficult to be precise but a conservative estimate for this product is that it has a life span of 10 years from date of first use for metal components or 5 years from date of first use or 10 years from date of first storage for textile components.

However, please note that the following factors will further reduce the safe working life of the product. Metal components: normal use, exposure to chemical reagents, heat contamination, high impact load or failure to maintain (clean/lubricate) as recommended.

Textile components: most textile components are known to degrade gradually with time even when stored in ideal conditions. Additionally normal use, rope burn, exposure to elevated temperatures, high impact load, prolonged exposure to UV light including sunlight, abrasion, cuts or failure to maintain (clean) as recommended will cause further reduction in strength.

What all the above means is that we will not repair Friends manufactured more than 10 years ago and we advise that for your safety any equipment covered by the above should be withdrawn from use.

Please Note: Wild Country recommend that repairs can only be undertaken on Friends less than ten years old from the date of intended repair. This is due to the need to follow the European Directive 89/686/EEC which require that manufacturers give an obsolecence date for all PPE products .
Therefore it is important that you make sure of the age of your unit before embarking on any repair. This can be done by clicking through to the Friend Age Guide.
