Technical Friends

The Original Cams from the Original Cam Company

Technical Friend 3.5
‘If it ain’t broke….don’t fix it!’ - While plenty of companies are rushing out copies, the original Friends remain a true ‘tried and tested’ product. Tweaked and refined over 30 years of production the current incarnations are still the backbone of the majority of climbers’ racks today.

Wild Country's range of Technical Friends is known the world over for their reliability, predictability and holding power...

Wild Country was founded on the Friend and so what we don't know about cams probably isn't worth knowing and so when we say that we feel our current range will stand up against anyones then it's worth taking note.

By their nature light, ergonomic and intuitive to use the classic Technical Friend range has many proven attributes that are hard to match, including: unrivalled coverage from 10mm to 197mm; proven 13.75 degree cam angle holding power (even in flares), and a placement stability that simply oozes confidence.

So when you’re out there looking it’s great to know there’s still a benchmark product with enough crag time logged that you can rely on them, every time and at all times.

And with a free racking biner with each one you know that they give great value too - this free biner comes with all individual units sold up to size 4.

Technical Specs

Wild Country's latest range of Technical Friends feature important technical advances in strength, size range, weight and durability. Each new colour-coded size defines the most technically advanced cams in the world and importantly matches with the rest of our gear.

And here are some of the other cool things that define the latest generation of Friends:

Easier to use
Re-profiled, colour-coded cams ensure tangle free racking on long pitches. Extended triggers allow for deeper placement. Friends are colour co-ordinated both cams and tape for easier selection and also colour co-ordinate with the rest of Wild Country's gear size for size.

Neat Technical Features
Constant 13.75 cam angle - giving the best compromise between expansion and strength however open of closed the Friend, Full strength camstops - mean in passive placements they'll still hold, Ballistic Nylon sheath - for rigidity and long lasting strength, Super strong springs - hold Friends in place better and stop walking, Chrome Molybdenum axle - high strength and high corrosion resistance.

The Biggest Range
The Wild Country range of Technical Friends is one of the biggest in the world - from the diminutive Friend 00 to the size 4 (including two specialist sizes for desert cracks - 1.25 and 1.75) we've got you covered. No other range of cams has you better protected.

More 'Friendly' Advice

What Wild Country doesn't know about cams could be written on a postage stamp....however, what we do know is much harder to get over in the written form without it being very long confusing and difficult to understand.

However, we felt that it was very important that people understood cams and camming better as it would make their climbing safer if the principles of how a Friend actually worked could be imparted. Also by understanding cams it would be easier to see why Friends - Techs and Zeros - worked as well as they do and retain their place at the top of the evolutionary tree.

That's why in 2003 we published 'the Cam Book' which laid out the principles of camming in a format we felt people would be able to understand. This contained not only the whys and wherefores of How Friends Work, but also a lot of advice in terms of the 'do's and dont's' of placing and maintaining cams.

It's super important to learn more about Friends before you use them or even to refresh your knowledge about how and why they work and therefore in this Friends and Camming section we have tried to distill this information into useable and understandable bits size pieces so that they can be grasped and taken on board.

All individual Tech Friends sold in 2009/10 come with a free racking biner....another great reason to stick with the original cams from the original cam company...
